History of Excellence
In September 1685 Augustin Courtauld VI, a Huguenot refugee from La Rochelle in France, sought sanctuary in England. He was a Gold and Silversmith and successfully sold his skills to the "Courts" of the day. Some generations later the Courtauld family became disenchanted with the Gold and Silver Trades and George Courtauld became an apprentice to Peter Merzeau a Silk Weaver in Spitalfields, London. His decision was to plant the seed for what was to become a global company of 100,000 people.
In 1905, seeing enormous demand for silk, Samuel Courtauld took the inspirational decision to obtain a licence from the Silk Institute in Kew, London to manufacture artificial silk. He also bought the exclusive rights to Charles Frederick Topham's unique Box Spinning Machine. Combined, these two decisions were pivotal and Courtaulds dominated the world of artificial fibre production for the next six decades.
The first spinning boxes were made from aluminium sealed in natural rubber to prevent oxidisation of the aluminium. Seeking a more economical and less labour intensive method of manufacture, Courtaulds produced the first Bakelite Spinning Box in 1926 and the Courtaulds Bakelite Moulding team was born.
This team was to become a company in its own right, building unparalleled expertise in composite materials, engineering and manufacturing.
